Some Of The Basics To Selling Your Photos
Mar 7th, 2008 by admin
Many people are put off from selling their photographs for many reasons, well don’t be. It’s not that difficult, however if you are looking to make your fortune then that’s a different matter altogether. As a way to get your photographs seen and for you to gain experience and confidence, there are some very simple steps that can be followed. You will hear a lot about stock photography and microstock agencies. Stock agencies are difficult to get into and are much more inclined to stick with photographers who have built up a good reputation and who are well known to them and their customers, this type of relationship takes many years of hard work and determination. Microstock on the other hand allows anybody the opportunity to submit their photographs. Providing you submit good quality images, that meet the criteria set by that agency, your images will be accepted and your photo’s shown on their web site for customers all over the world to purchase. This in its self can be a great confidence booster for the amateur who has just started, don’t be under the impression that you will make buckets of cash because you won’t, but as more and more of your images are accepted the more confident you will become and the more knowledge you will gain.
Microstock.
One of the first things you will be wondering is how much will I have to pay? Most Microstock agencies are free, so let’s not worry about that. There are many agencies who are involved in microstock such as Dreamstime, Bigstock, Shutter stock and Fotolia just to name a few. It is a good idea to go to each website and read their terms and conditions before you begin to submit any images, this will give you a good understanding of what will and won’t be accepted and many agencies offer sound advice and help to get you started.
Submitting images.
Visit each website and check exactly what type of format you need to use, are there any file size restrictions? What type of images are the most popular? And are they looking for any particular images at the moment? All this information is normally available on each site; also check what the procedure is for submitting model release forms this is very important. If any of your images are not accepted most agencies will explain why they have been declined and how to improve them for re submission. So don’t be put off if you have any declined, use it as a learning experience. A great advantage of using microstock agencies is that you are not restricted to one particular agency you can submit your photographs to many different ones this will increase your chances of selling your images, so submit to as many as you can. One other thing to mention is patience, some of the companies have a large amount of submissions to go through and this can take anything from 24 hours to 5 days, so be patient.
Summary.
Go on be bold and try it, you may be surprised and the first time you sell one of your photographs you will be over the moon. You may not be able to give up you job straight away but enjoy the experience and build on your knowledge, earn some cash and buy some new equipment to help you with your photography. Above all enjoy yourself.
